The material, examined

What the name tells you

Surface color and powder color answer different questions. A streak can help, but it damages material and does not belong on a valuable finished piece. Magnetism also depends on the material and possible mixtures; it is not a universal fake detector.

A useful question at the counter

What supports the seller’s identity claim beyond metallic shine? Seek testing for beads or objects represented as a special material.

A note for your collection

Protect polished surfaces from abrasion. Avoid leaving uncertain mixed specimens wet; do not grind mineral pigments without dust controls.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
