01 · The material

Natural History

Magnetite occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and iron deposits. Its presence does not establish one formation story for a whole rock.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

Magnetic response is useful but not exclusive to magnetite. Industrial material and mixtures can respond too.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Keep specimens dry and protected from knocks. Keep strong magnetic pieces away from magnet-sensitive objects and follow device manufacturers’ guidance.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

“Lodestone” is used for naturally magnetized material. A magnetite label and a claim of permanent natural magnetization are different claims.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
