01 · The material

Natural History

Hematite occurs in many rock types and weathering environments. Plates, rounded masses and earthy red material can share an identity.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

A shiny black bead is not a secure identification. Do not use magnetism as a one-step authenticity test.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Protect polished surfaces from abrasion. Avoid leaving uncertain mixed specimens wet; do not grind mineral pigments without dust controls.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

The name refers to blood, reflecting its red streak rather than the color of every specimen.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
