01 · The material

Natural History

Minerals can fill or replace wood while preserving aspects of its structure. Silica is common, but not every petrified wood has identical composition.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

Look for preserved wood anatomy. A ring-like pattern alone does not establish species, age or locality.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Protect thin slices and existing cracks. Identify the replacing minerals before choosing chemical cleaning or cutting methods.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

A fossil label should carry its collection history. A resemblance to a famous forest does not recover a missing provenance.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
