The material, examined

What the name tells you

The host and the inclusion are two identification problems. Start with what the main material is, then investigate the branches. Pattern recognition can narrow the possibilities, but it cannot replace measurements or analysis.

A useful question at the counter

What evidence identifies the host as chalcedony rather than opal or another material?

A note for your collection

Keep the host material and any treatments in mind when cleaning. Document both reflected-light and backlit views of a slice.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
