01 · The material

Natural History

Dendritic is a shape description. Similar branching forms can occur in more than one host material.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

A tree-like pattern does not identify its chemistry or prove that the host is agate. Dendritic opal and other materials need separate identification.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Keep the host material and any treatments in mind when cleaning. Document both reflected-light and backlit views of a slice.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

These names draw on the resemblance to living forms. The resemblance is part of the appeal; it is not evidence of a plant fossil.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
