The material, examined

What the name tells you

Calcite and aragonite share a chemical formula but arrange their atoms differently. Composition is only part of a mineral’s identity; structure also matters.

A useful question at the counter

Is the color a variety label or a claim about composition? “Orange calcite” does not identify every orange tumble.

A note for your collection

Avoid acids, abrasive cleaning and knocks. Dust gently rather than treating a polished calcite as scratch-resistant quartz.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
