01 · The material

Natural History

Mineralogical onyx is straight-banded chalcedony. Decorative “onyx” carvings and slabs may instead be banded carbonate material.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

Do not assume every black onyx bead is naturally black or that every onyx bowl is quartz. Identify the material first.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Until identity is known, avoid acidic cleaners and scratch tests. Carbonate and quartz objects need different care.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

The trade often applies onyx to uniformly black chalcedony too. That usage can conceal both the original pattern and dye treatment.

Meanings & modern crystal practice

These associations belong to spiritual traditions and personal symbolism, distinct from mineralogical facts.

C&C’s original practice notes associate this material with grounding and a harmonious home. A personal symbol for the atmosphere you want to cultivate. These are contemporary spiritual associations and editorial reflection suggestions, distinct from mineralogical properties.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
