The material, examined
What the name tells you
Pleochroism and cleavage affect how a cutter orients the gem. Natural and treated color can both fade, so “natural” is not a promise of permanent color in a sunny display.
A useful question at the counter
What is known about color treatment, and can the display location avoid strong light and heat?
A note for your collection
Avoid prolonged bright light and heat: color can fade. Protect the two perfect cleavage directions from impacts.
