The material, examined
What the name tells you
Its color involves defects in the quartz structure associated with aluminum and irradiation. Natural and treated stones can look alike. The useful distinction is the stone’s documented treatment history, not whether its brown looks sufficiently earthy.
A useful question at the counter
Ask whether irradiation or heating is known, and keep the answer with the specimen. If it is unknown, record that rather than converting it to “natural color.”
A note for your collection
Keep it away from prolonged strong light and heat. Protect pointed crystals from knocks; use a soft cloth for routine dusting.
Sources & further reading
References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
