Garnet

01 · The material

Natural History

Many familiar garnets occur in metamorphic rocks. Different members require different conditions and chemistry.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

Red is not a complete identification. Garnets may combine the chemistry of more than one endmember.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Protect crystals and settings from knocks. Ask about treatment and any filled fractures before mechanical cleaning.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

Rhodolite, tsavorite and demantoid are names within a much wider garnet story; they are not interchangeable.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
