01 · The material

Natural History

Barite occurs in veins and several sedimentary and volcanic-related settings. Its weight is an especially useful clue.

02 · Observe

Under the Loupe

A tabular crystal is not automatically barite. Shape, density and the associated minerals are stronger together than alone.

03 · Ownership

Collect & Care

Handle thin blades gently. Avoid abrasive cleaning and household chemical experiments.

04 · The human story

History, Lore & Tradition

Documented history

Its name comes from a Greek word for weight, reflecting its high density.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
