The material, examined

What the name tells you

A different arrangement of atoms can change a mineral’s symmetry and properties without changing its formula. That is why “calcium carbonate” is not enough to distinguish calcite from aragonite.

A useful question at the counter

Does the label identify a mineral, a decorative cluster shape, or a locality? Record the evidence for each.

A note for your collection

Keep delicate sprays and clusters cushioned. Avoid acids and abrasive cleaning.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
