The material, examined

What the name tells you

Hardness describes resistance to scratching, not toughness. Topaz’s cleavage is a practical reminder that a high number does not make a crystal safe from every knock.

A useful question at the counter

Is it actually topaz, and what treatments are disclosed? Color descriptions cannot answer either question alone.

A note for your collection

Avoid impacts and sudden temperature changes. High scratch hardness does not prevent splitting along cleavage.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
