The material, examined

What the name tells you

A species name, an aggregate description and a trade variety answer different questions. Chalcedony describes texture; agate often describes structure; a locality name adds a claim about origin. None should be used as a substitute for the others.

A useful question at the counter

Is the name describing the actual material, a pattern, or a claimed locality? Keep those three parts of the label separate.

A note for your collection

Use gentle cleaning and avoid chemical or solvent experiments on an unknown polished piece. Treatments and attached materials may change what is safe.

Sources & further reading

References are labeled by role. A source documenting a belief is not evidence of a medical or mineralogical effect. Reflection prompts are C&C editorial suggestions.
